本系列讲述未来人类与来自猎户座，以宗教结合外星种族的联盟“星盟”（Covenant）的战争。星盟的首领认为人类会阻止他们的伟大使命——朝圣之旅，因此对人类展开杀戮，尽管人类顽强扺抗，也无法击败对手的强大科技力量。在联合国太空指挥部(UNSC)最后且最大的要塞Reach星遭到圣约毁灭后，逃出来的幸存者发现了先行者(Forerunners)的遗迹，也是星盟的圣地——“HALO环带”。故事由此展开。
