怒之铁拳1代1991年，正是格斗清版动作游戏在街机房如日中天的年代。从80年代末TECHNOS的《双截龙》到90年代初CAPCOM的《快打旋风》（FINAL FIGHT），这种以武术技击闯关为内容的动作游戏已日趋成熟，非凡是《快打旋风》，在街机房掀起了持久不衰的狂潮。1991年，CAPCOM又推出了格斗名作《街头霸王2》（8人街霸），它既是对战游戏又不乏清版过关的特色，一时间成为街机房最为红火的游戏，“打斗类”也由此成为当时最受欢迎的游戏类型。
